GENERAL IDEA: sharp, repressed, clinging to denial, apathetic, selective, predisposed to mistrust positions of privilege and authority, currently attempting to reconcile her trauma and guilt with the normal life she imagined for herself before the war (spoiler: it's not going to pan out), as yet unaware of how thoroughly soiled her concept of love has become and how repellent she finds it to be cared for, unreceptive to generosity and familiarity, survivor's guilt manifesting in self-doubt that will later become self-hatred
HISTORY: ruth was sent to auschwitz-birkenau with her father, jakob, as he was elderly and she was in poor health from the malnutrition rampant in the warsaw ghettos. her family had been giving their rations to her and she was narrowly allowed to work in the women's camp while her father was sent directly to the gas chambers. she cultivated the interest of a commander, becoming his mistress in order to keep herself from the brothel and the chambers. gradually she was alienated from everyone but him, having observed the ambivalence of the male prisoners to the rapes within the camps and the violent jealousy of the women not chosen for the brothel.
come 1944, her barracks were to be indiscriminately liquidated. commander koehler, who believed himself to be in love with her (and told her often), offered to hide her if she consented to be his wife. this coincided with the auschwitz revolt, destroying one of the crematoria. she remained behind a false wall below the kitchen's coal chute for several days, fed sparingly, and suspected of involvement in the revolt once koehler returned to her. once he was convinced she had taken no part in it (and she hadn't, nor would she if offered), she was smuggled out of the camp inside a suitcase. he hid her in buchenbach and acquired false documentation for her, giving her the identity of greta koehler. her "husband" remained at birkenau until the dismantling of the crematoria in 1944 and the decline of the nazi regime, at which point he and his wife bribed swiss border patrol for entrance into the country. shortly after, she fled from him at a train station, sold his ring, and abandoned all of her previous names.
